When I try to set a filename on a document (i.e. Insert/Quick

Resolved Question:

When I try to set a filename on a document (i.e. Insert/Quick parts/file name) it gives me a response {FILENAME\*MERGEFORMAT} - but doesn't show the file name. Also on various listsm which I have have now been corrupted showing, for instance; {HYPERLINK"http://mywebb.tiscali. co.uk/bagely/page1/page13/page13.htm!\o"high"} - this for a list of books by Desmond Bagely.
When I print either of these document types, the errors do not show on the print.
How do I stop this happening and how do I get my many files back to how they were?

AAATom :

Hello and welcome to JustAnswer!

I would like to help you get your documents to show properly.

Can you, please, tell me do you actually refer to Word documents?
The text in curly braces you posted looks like field codes from Word.

If this is about Word documents, please tell me also which Word version you have.

Thank you,
Tom

Customer:

where do I find this information?

AAATom :

Hm, do you mean the Word version?

Customer:

Yes

AAATom :

Well, it depends on the version - for example in Word 2003 you would get that information by clicking on menu Help then select About.
If it is newer version you will not see the menus.

Customer:

word 2007

AAATom :

OK, thank you!

AAATom :

Please give me a minute to compile the instructions how to turn field codes off.

AAATom :

This is how you can turn showing field codes off:
1. Click on the Office button and click on "Word Options" button in lower right.
2. In the Word Options window that opened, in the left pane click on "Advanced"
3. In the right pane scroll down until you see the "Show document content" section.
4. Look for "Show field codes instead of their values" option and clear the check-box.
5. Click on OK button

AAATom :

Please try the above steps and let me know if you face any difficulties.

AAATom :

Let me know if it worked too, please.

Customer:

That works. Can I print this chat for future reference?

AAATom :

Great!

AAATom :

Yes, I believe you can print this page as any other web page.

AAATom :

The chat will remain available in the future too.

AAATom :

You can also bookmark (add to Favorites) this page.

AAATom :

If the chat does not print well I can switch it to Q&A mode. It will be visible in full there.

Customer:

I'm happy with that Tom. Many thanks.

AAATom :

You are welcome!

AAATom :

I am glad I could help!

Customer:

Bye

AAATom :

If you find my advice helpful I would appreciate it very much if you could take a minute and rate my service.

AAATom :
