I'm backing up the C:/ drive now to an external hard drive. Is that right?
How do I then try do a factory restore?

Thanks James, sorry for the delay in replying. Problem was eventually solved with a Restore but it might be worth advising people to back up (export/import) all their email contacts as well. I didn't think about doing this and lost all my contacts from Windows Live Mail. Annoying but I'm glad everything else seems to running smoothly now. It was a simple solution after everything else I had tried. Not sure it was really £32 worth of advice but hey, I hadn't thought of it myself, I'm happy to have it working and would probably still recommend Just Answer to others who are stuck.
