This is usually an issue with the Firmware, so I would first like you to do this please.
Remove the charger from the Kindle and hold the power button to off seconds.
Release, then connect the charger and try to turn on the Kindle.

This has not worked it is still dead

have tried that but no luck the green light comes on when I hold the button but as soon as I let go it flashes a couple of times then goes off

It is the internal mainboard that has faulted on the Kindle.
We have ruled out all other causes .
I am really sorry about this and you are going to have to return the Kindle to have it replaced. It will be covered by the warranty if this has not expired, and the replacement will be done at no cost to you.
But the Kindle will have to be replaced.
