As far as I am aware, the system is completely restored. I have not checked the Norton anti virus software but I am assuming that this is now back on.

This time the installation stopped at 97% - which is significantly better. Almost there but not quite! Very frustrating.
I think you are right about the iTunes (which I never use) and the Epson printer drives. I had a problem with the printer - scanner was not working. The copier facility now has a malfunction. I didn't suspect a link with the installation.
What do you suggest is to be done now?
It is now 1105pm UK time. Should we continue on Tuesday?
