I can neither receive calls not phone out.

in both cases there is just a loud crackling sound when I pick up.

The handset / base is Panasonic.

Model KX - TG7160E S

I have had the phone for years and rarely if ever had any problems with it.

I have been out all the morning and made no calls, so it was not until I could not receive any incoming calls nor make any out that I was aware of the problem.

I cannot review a phone line problem which is what you have. TalkTalk will need to review your line and see if there is an issue.
