the on/off button only stays on for about 8 seconds when pressed. the picture on the kindle is a battery with charge symbol but when I try to charge it , the orange light comes on but only for seconds before the green light comes on, when I remove it from the charger the green light goes out

This is usually an issue with the Firmware, so I would first like you to do this please.
Remove the charger from the Kindle and hold the power button to off for 35 seconds.
Release, then connect the charger and try to turn on the Kindle.
