I have had a call from a company who knew that I had a lot

Customer Question

I have had a call from a company who knew that I had a lot of error messages on my computer and possibly corrupting software causing the computer to run slowly. I allowed them access to my computer and they were able to show me 13,000+ error messages which they say are routed to them. They claim to have your approval to remove the errors and wanted a fee to open Windows 10 running on my computer for £149 pa. I do not have the company name but it worries me that they know what is on my computer and they sport your logo as evidence that they are legitimate.
Can you advise if I can remove this corrupting software and errors and how I go about it please?
If not can you tell me which company you authorise to carry cleaning up my computer?
Cheers,
Keith

Hello my name is***** do not rate until we are finished. I look forward to assisting and am very sorry to hear that you are having this problem. Before anything else I need to make sure you know this is not Microsoft this is a paid tech support site called JustAnswer.co.uk but I do work on Microsoft products daily. What you are describing unfortunately sounds like a scam, Microsoft will never call you unsolicited. Normally they open what is called the event viewer and shows you lots of "errors" and tell you that your machine is infected. That is not the case, the event viewer logs any and all things that happen on your computer whether it hung on starting up or turned off improperly due to a power failure. A lot of minor things will show up there too which is why it is used for the scam because anyone and everyone will have errors showing there. Here is a full page (from Microsoft) explaining these scams in some more detail:https://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspxDo not pay them anything if you did immediately dispute the charges with your bank account and report your card stolen as they may try to re-use it. Once you have done that report them to the internet criminal center here:http://www.ic3.gov/default.aspxAfter that in case you are worried and still want to scan for problems you can do that on your own for free. Download and install Malwarebytes from here which you only need the free version:https://www.malwarebytes.org/mwb-download/Once installed let it update and then run a full system scan. Remove anything it finds. If you have any questions at all reply and let me know. If not please don’t forget to leave a positive rating by clicking the stars/smileys for my help - it is greatly appreciated. Please note you are rating me only not this site or your Microsoft products.

I can not do anything like that I can only post here. If that was the email you signed up with there should be an email that brings you back to this page. The answer itself will not be in the email you will always need to come back here to read the entire thing.

Thank you for your reply Freddy but it seems precious little for the fee being charged. I had hoped that you would look at these error messages and figure the major source.
Expert:  Freddy M. replied 1 year ago.
I told you exactly what they were. If you want me to look directly at them I would need to do remote support which has an extra fee. You could also send me the information one and I can tell you exactly what that specific event means. But as I mentioned they are doing nothing to your computer and I gave you a way to actually check your computer for infections. Please make sure you read my entire answer. The event viewer will always have events in it, it is supposed to. There is no major source it is a log of things happening on your computer at all times.

Thanks again Freddy. I will monitor performance and contact you at my.justanswer.co.uk if it becomes a problem.
Cheers,
Keith

Here is another report on this scam from Hot To Geek instead of Microsoft this time:http://www.howtogeek.com/180514/the-%E2%80%9Ctech-support%E2%80%9D-scammers-called-htg-so-we-had-fun-with-them/Here is an image of event viewer errors that will always be there as it logs anything that happens:http://cdn9.howtogeek.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/img_52e1b2cd0d9a9.pngThe only way to stop them is to turn off logging events but doing that could make it very hard for anyone working on your computer so I do not suggest it.They can use that to find out what the last "event" was when your problem last happened.I would however recommend running Malwarebytes like I gave you before and remove anything it find, because it will find any infections on your machine. To get back to me go to justanswer.co.uk and look under my questions. If you have any questions at all reply and let me know. If not please don’t forget to leave a positive rating by clicking the stars/smileys for my help - it is greatly appreciated. Please note you are rating me only not this site or your Microsoft products.
