Please power off the computer by pressing the power button for 6 to 10 seconds then wait 2 seconds and power it back on and hold the F8 key (or press it repeatedly) until you see a black screen with options.

In that window move down with the keyboard arrows and select the "Last good known configuration" option then hit Enter.

Let me know what happens.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It is asking me to select the operating system and is highlighting
Microsoft windows XP Home Edition
It says use up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice
Press ENTER to choose

All i have at the moment is the one connected. I have a separate laptop but as you would expect it is a built in keyboard
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

If you plug the external keyboard onto the laptop can you test if the arrow keys work

Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Just so we make sure the keyboard works properly

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Will have a go
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Ok great

Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Plug it back into the Desktop and give it another go

Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Ok. Got kryboard back into the pc.Started up again and using up and down keys i am into the black window with various options incl last known good conf. Do you want me to select that again or another option?
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Let me know if the same thing happens.

If so, you will need to try another keyboard and if it still won't work you will need a Windows XP installation disc to repair the installation.

Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Yes, select that option please

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Seems we have been here before. Frozen on highlighted microsoft windows xp home edition snd not able to use up and down krys to select other options listed at bottom of the screen
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Ok that might be a driver related problem depending on the keyboard you're using - you may need to use a PS2 keyboard for it to work properly before the computer boots into Windows

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Martin the up and down keys are working when i choose the option for last good conf. Would this eliminate keyboard probs?
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Can you select it and hit Enter

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No the up and downkeys only worked in the black scree options where i was able to zelect last good conf out of about 10 other options. Once i selected last good conf out of the 10 or so options it takes me into a screen with microsoft windows xp home edition option the only option highlighted. When i then hit enter it takrs me back to that origonal horrible erfor message saying fatal error
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Ok thank you

Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Can you go back there and select Safe Mode instead

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
was thinking thst might be worth a go. Here goes
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Fingers crossed

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Tried safe mode but it takes me into the frozen situation again with sole option highlighted microsoft windows xp. Think its worth trying any of the other 10 or so options? We know 2 have not worked
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

What's the last option you see on the bottom?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Options i see are
Safe mode with command prompt
Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Start windows normally
Reboot
Return to os choices menu
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Try Safe mode with command prompt

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Noback to frozen window that does not allow up and down
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

The alternative is to get a Windows XP installation disc and run the repair option

Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Seems like it's your only option at this point

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I hit enter following selection of safe mode with command prompt and get back to the evil effor message once more
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

None of those options will work as the system is corrupted - you will need a boot disc

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Ok seems to be the only opgion. Where do i get the disco
Expert:  Martin replied 1 month ago.

Windows XP is no longer supported so it may be a little difficult to get one, I will look online for you

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
That great thank you Martin
