Hi, thank you for contacting JustAnswer.com. My name is Russell. I will do my best to provide the right answer to your question. Try removing the batteries, and leaving the camera on a (dry, non-humid, non-dusty) shelf for overnight. Then put the batteries back in and try the camera again. Then try cleaning the terminals in the battery compartment, after removing the batteries, first by rubbing off with a fresh pencil eraser, then by wiping the terminals off with cotton swabs moistened in rubbing alcohol, then letting them dry off for 5+ minutes with the battery compartment door open, then try turning the camera On again. How long has the battery or batteries in the camera been in-use? If over a year, then you might possibly have a battery/batteries that are getting weak. Rechargeable batteries do get weaker with time, and eventually fail to deliver enough power to start up a device like a digital camera; they then need replacing. The replacement battery needs to be charged up for 6+ hours before its first use, owing to its having been on a shelf for a considerable time. How old is the camera? in months or years since you bought it. Has the camera been dropped or otherwise subjected to mechanical shock(s) in its lifetime?Has the camera been operated in or subjected to, temperatures below 32 degrees F (freezing point) or above about 100 degrees F ?Has it ever been subjected to a humidity higher than 85 % or gotten wet ?Has the camera been operated in a gritty or sandy environment, such as a beach, a seaside, a construction site, or the like?

Do Menu icons show up on the screen, or is it completely blank/black at all times? How old is the camera? in months or years since you bought it. Hi Russell, screen is not showing anything and not lit.The camera is over 10years old.regards ***** *****

That is a problem with the LCD screen, or its connections, or perhaps its supporting circuitry, that happens with age (and/or the wear-and-tear factors I asked you about, when a camera is treated carelessly... heat and humidity corrodes fine connections, mechanical shock breaks them or makes them more fragile and more prone to be parted by corrosion, or shock cracks the circuitry, the interior of a circuitry component, etc.) You will have to decide between having your 10-years-old camera repaired, or replacing it. You would be able to ask a Canon repair facility for your sort of camera, as to what the estimated price and charges to you for the repair would be, before deciding to send your camera to them for repair. Would you like to do so?If so, then tell me your region of the UK (if the website is correct and you are in the UK), and I will get you the information for contacting your nearest Canon Authorized camera repair facility.

Hi Russell HIs the Canon Power Shot A640 still available and worth repairing or should I update with current digital camera replacement? What do you recommend?RegardsJohn H

The first Review page for the subject model of Canon camera, that I found on searching, is from 2006, so obviously it is fairly old/classic.It is still available for purchase as a Used item. For instance:http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000HARTYI/ref=dp_olp_used?ie=UTF8&condition=usedall Used, but from 79.50 at cheapest, to about 200-odd (+ of course, eBay shipping fees, in most cases, I would imagine, which would add some $20 to $30 to the price.) As for New... there's one offered that I found, for the astonishingly high price of $640. See next link:http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000HARTYI/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=new Repair-servicing is offered here at $75:http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/261557906309?ul_noapp=true&chn=ps&lpid=82 What to choose depends upon your preference, ultimately. A new replacement equivalent... well, what do you - or, did you - use the A640 for? and what results did you expect from it?That would dictate what you would consider an equivalent replacement camera.
