Dog with tummy problems. Old English Sheepdog, 9 years old.

Customer Question

Dog with tummy problems. Old English Sheepdog, 9 years old. Been eating ok, but not passing much solids. Been sick - a little yellow mucus. As energetic as usual, gets 1 to 2 hours walk a day. Normally hungry on return from walk, tonight not.

Can you recommend a suitable laxative, please?

Welcome and thanks for asking your question. My name is Dr. Peter I am a licensed veterinarian. I am happy to answer your question today. First I need to ask you a few questions to be well informed and give you the best advice.

1- Is he straining to defecate?
2- Is he not passing any feces at all?
3- How long has it been since he vomited?
4- How much does he weigh?

There may be a slight delay between your follow ups and my replies as I type out a thorough reply for you.

1. Yes. Usually does have several tries before he succeeds. We understand that weak digestion is a usual problem with this breed - he is our third OES and they have all had occasional problems. He is fed on white meat - usually chicken, and some brown bread, plus occasional tit-bits.

2 Not today, a little yesterday, but very liquid. Previously normal.

3. About 5 hours, but just a little. Same yesterday, about the same time, near the end of his walk.

4. About 38 kilos.

So when he passes feces it is not hard solid or dry but instead liquid like diarrhea, correct?

I will have an answer for you within 5-10 minutes of receiving response to the above question.
