Hello Elizabeth, I'm Dr. Deb and I'll do my best to help you today.

I wonder if you'd do something for me which might help identify the material you're concerned about.
Take some of the grains and smear them out on a damp, white paper towel.
Then, please tell me what color (if any) the papertowel is.

Thanks, Deb

Yes, this makes much more sense to me than no color at all.
More than likely this is flea dirt or flea feces since fleas ingest blood and their feces are actually dried blood.

You might not see fleas on him since they can hop off and on a dog's body but this more than likely the cause of the blackish specks.
And, contrary to what many owners think, not all dogs with fleas will scratch or itch..only those who are allergic to the flea saliva will do so.

There are a number of excellent flea products available these days and this LINK lists a number of them.

Fleas can be an incredible nuisance to get rid of and this LINK discusses why.
All pets in the house have to be treated as well as the environment.

I hope this helps but I'm sorry that I have to suggest fleas as a probable source of the specks you're seeing. If this was just dirt or something he rolled in, then the papertowel shouldn't have turned brown.
