I am sorry to hear about Buster. You sound very worried.
My name is Rebecca. I am a veterinarian, and will do my best to help.
If you look at his gums, are they a normal pink color?
Is he breathing normally?
Hi Rebecca, he has me so scared.
It does sound scary.
he seems to be breathing very fast at the moment, but i have not looked at gums
Are there veterinarians open now? I am guessing it is about 10 at night there?
Is he breathing with his mouth open, or closed?
yes it is just after 10. My husband is looking at his gums now
If they are pink, that is a good sign. If his gums look white, that is concerning.
his gums look pale pink but he is breathing with his mouth closed
he is holding his head up and his ears are up
Pale pink indicates either he is not getting enough oxygen into his bloodstream ( which could be a heart or a lung problem), or that he is bleeding internally, or he is going into shock ( low blood pressure, low blood sugar, hormone imbalance).
If I could, I would be checking his pulses, listening to his heart and lungs, taking his temperature.
ok, i did wonder if maybe he had a heart attack or something like that.
Actual heart attacks ( blockages of the coronary arteries) don't happen in dogs.
ok thank you
But they can have heart disease: congestive heart failure, cardiomyopathy.
Dogs can get strokes, not common but they do happen.
Is he conscious? Does he respond to you?
yes he is conscious and when i called his name he looked up at me
That is a good sign.
Will he take food or water?
Is there any way to get him checked by a veterinarian tonight?
yes i am sure we can call his usual vet. I spose i am just scared to
I don't blame you a bit; I would be scared if my dog were acting like this.
I sure wish I could feel his pulse and listen to his heart!
he was fine whilst we were out walking he just stopped and wouldnt go any further, thank goodness we were at home. he poor little chest seems to be heaving as he breathes
I am worried by your description; I can only imagine how much more worried you must be.
The first thing I would look for, if I could, is a problem with his heart, like an irregular heart beat, or a murmur, or sounds of fluid in his lungs.
i think i had better call his vet, i feel so responsible as i was walking him
Walking him is normal, you did not know this would happen.
I would definitely call his vet.
ok thank you. i will. I love him so much he has helped me lose 3 stone just by walking him
I hope he is doing better soon. Dogs are just the best.
Thank you for your help.
