Welcome! I am Dr. Altman, a licensed veterinarian and I am happy to answer your questions.
So sorry your Rosie is having such difficulties with her appetite
This is all too common in older pets, the loss of appetite
If you have ruled out medical causes for the reduced appetite you can try things like:
Boiled chicken or lean meat with white rice
Jarred baby foods work well (meat varieties)
Your veterinary clinic will have formulas specifically formulated for dogs with low or no appetite
Sometimes adding in an antacid such as pepcid (famotidine) or prilosec (omeprazole) can help, administering it about 15-30 minutes prior to attempting to feed
Please let me know if this information is helpful. If you are able to give me Rosie's weight I can give you a dose of antacid if you like. This is a human over the counter formula that is available at your local grocery or pharmacy
What about adding in senior food combined with the normal food or supplementing the senior food with a low salt broth or even white rice and boiled chicken with the broth to entice the appetite?
So combining the senior food she is not as interested in with something more enticing yet bland as well
Does this make sense? Please let me know how else I can assist you today
The white rice will also reduce the loose stool as it is bland and adding fiber as well
Lean chicken or low salt broth would not be as rich and will be easier on the stomach
