Our 9 month old collie is very anxious in the car, this results

Customer Question

Our 9 month old collie is very anxious in the car, this results in him vomiting / drooling excessively causing him more distress. I took him along to the vet , unfortunately our usual vet is on hols , I was given Calmex capsules to give our dog.
Is there a safe "tranquilizer " I could purchase , we are heading of on holiday , it will be a 4 hour journey and I am concerned for our pooch and how he is "not" going to cope.
Thankyou , Val

Rebecca :

Val,

Rebecca :

I am sorry about Brodie's carsickness.

Rebecca :

My name isXXXXX am a veterinarian, and will do my best to help.

Rebecca :

There are tranquilizers like acepromazine that work well, but you can't get them over the counter.

Rebecca :

There are some things you can try. Ginger root is very good for motion sickness, and nausea.

Rebecca :

You can use fresh ginger, or get ginger capsules at a supplement, nutrition store

Rebecca :

There is also "melatonin", also sold in supplement and "health food" type stores. It has a calming effect, and can make a dog drowsy.

Rebecca :

You can try one or the other or both together.

Rebecca :

I am not seeing responses from you. I hope you can see what I am writing!

Rebecca :

I can try a different way to connect with you if I do not hear from you.

Customer:

I have Melatonin , what amount would I be able to give Brodie and how often ?

Rebecca :

I would start at 3 mg, but if that is not helping, you can give 6.

Rebecca :

Give it as needed, it usually lasts 8 to 12 hours.

Rebecca :

It is safe, and I always try it and the ginger before using drugs like the acepromazine.

Customer:

Thankyou so much for your advice , I am a nurse who cah help sick people but not dogs .

Rebecca :

You are welcome!

Rebecca :

Please let me know if I can answer anything else.

Rebecca :

I will be checking back, to see how he is doing.
