Hello Suzanne, I'm Dr. Deb and will do my best to help you today.

This is a very good question which I get asked a lot this time of year.

I don't advise owners to clip or shave their dogs in the summer time for several reasons:

1. The fur can act as an insulator and help to keep the body cool.

2. Dogs can develop skin issues with increased exposure to the skin similar to humans...certain kinds of cancers as well as risk for sunburn. Dogs with white fur are more prone to these issues than darker colored dogs.

For the dogs with thicker, longer coats who mat easily or are a management problem, then trimming can be useful but I don't suggest it at all for the shorter coated breeds.

I hope this helps. Deb
