there, I wonder if anyone can help me. My one year old

Resolved Question:

Hi there,
I wonder if anyone can help me.
My one year old bitch has come into season only three months after her first season and thus before we has time to have her spayed.
Our male dog is going crazy and has he has just had a tumour removed from his bowel and still has internal stitches.
As a temporary measure, we have caged her but this is hardly fair.
Any suggestions?

Dr. Susan :

Hi, I can help you with your question today

Dr. Susan :

The only thing that will stop a heat cycle (and it doesn't work immediately) is Ovaban.

Dr. Susan :

Ovaban should NOT be used if you plan to breed her in the future, as a common side effect is cystic endometrial hyperplasia.

Dr. Susan :

Aside from that, all we can do is keep them separate.

Dr. Susan :

Rather than crate her, I would crate him. He should have his activity restricted right now after his surgery anyway.

Dr. Susan :

If this is too difficult, I would strongly consider having her go stay with a friend or family member until her heat cycle is complete.

Customer:

Thank you, that is very helpful.

Dr. Susan :

We definitely do not want to risk dehiscence (suture tear out) from his surgery.

Dr. Susan :

You're welcome!

Dr. Susan :

Please let me know if you have further questions. I am happy to continue until I provide the service that you seek.

Customer:

Unfortunately all our friends have male dogs. But yes, I am worried about how stitches

Dr. Susan :

Exactly. Since you don't have an option to have one of them leave temporarily, I would keep him crated for now.

Customer:

I will do that.

Dr. Susan :

I think that's the best plan for now.

Customer:

Would it be better to get some sedation for him?

Dr. Susan :

How long ago was his surgery?

Customer:

Dr. Susan :

Oh good. The majority of the healing should already be underway.

Dr. Susan :

I think sedation would be reasonable to try with him as well.

Customer:

I will do that.

Dr. Susan :

Wonderful.

Customer:

Thanks again

Dr. Susan :

You are very welcome :)

Customer:
