Customer Question

My dog has been passing clear discharge & blood from her back passage although she appears to be otherwise healthy? Can you advise me what may have caused these symptoms?

Marilyn, the discharge you are describing is consistent with the vaginal discharge we see in dogs that have a pyometra. A pyometra is a very bad infection of the uterus. Untreated a pyometra could be fatal, for this reason I would highly recommend having her checked today by a veterinarian. If she does have a pyometra she will need surgery to remove the infected uterus and antibiotics. Could there be other causes? Yes, a urinary tract infection, vaginitis, tumors, etc. are all possible causes. To determine the exact underlying cause she will need a hands on examination, blood work and xrays as initial screening test. Treatment will be based on exam and test results.
