I have a 12 yr old standard Poodle. He has had a fall down

Resolved Question:

Hi I have a 12 yr old standard Poodle. He has had a fall down our stairs. He seems ok. I dont think anything is broken! He can still walk slowly and stiffly. How urgently does he need attention? Is there any thing I can do to make him comfortable or do you think I need to get him to an emergency vet ?.

Hi, I can help you with your question. Did you see Coco fall?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

No my husband was there an picked him up and laid him on the sofa. He layed still for a while, and then got up but was walking with a limp but not crying. Very stiff every time he tries to walk

Poor boy. Is he able to put weight on all four legs?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

One of his legs seems painfuL when he walks

Expert:  Dr. Susan replied 2 years ago.
Does he hold it up completely?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

No tries to walk on it

Expert:  Dr. Susan replied 2 years ago.
That's good. Usually dogs with more serious injuries (fractures, dislocations, ligament ruptures) will refuse to bear any weight at all.

I think his soreness could be due to a soft tissue injury (contusion, sprain, etc) or it could be due to back or neck pain from the fall.

Aside from being painful, is he eating, urinating and defecating normally?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

He already has had his tea. Hasn't asked to go out side yet.

Expert:  Dr. Susan replied 2 years ago.
OK. As long as he remains normal otherwise, we can use a dose of an OTC pain medication for now. How much does he weigh?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

28 kilos i think

Expert:  Dr. Susan replied 2 years ago.
OK, and do you have any aspirin or Tylenol (acetaminophen) available? Does he have any history of liver or kidney disease or a sensitive stomach?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

All i have is paracetamol & ibuprofen

Expert:  Dr. Susan replied 2 years ago.
Great! Paracetamol is the same thing as Tylenol. What dose are your tablets (in mg)?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Adults elderly children over 12 / 2 tablets 4 times a day. Not for under 12 yrs

Expert:  Dr. Susan replied 2 years ago.
On the back it should list the active ingredient - acetaminophen ___mg. Please find that number.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

Paracetamol 500 mg caffeine 65 mg other povidone maize starch methyl cellulose talk calcium stearate and purified water

Expert:  Dr. Susan replied 2 years ago.
Oh dear, we do not want the kind with caffeine. Can you purchase another OTC medication?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

What is the best can pop to tesco

Expert:  Dr. Susan replied 2 years ago.
I recommend a regular 325mg aspirin. He can get one of these every 12 hours.
