Poor Chess! Most likely the discharge indicates an ear infection with either yeast, bacteria, or both. Cleaning out the discharge can be helpful, but it is likely that he will need a topical medication to cure the infection itself.

These are available by prescription through your local vet. I recommend having him evaluated by your vet for this reason. I would start with a physical exam and take a sample of the discharge to look under the microscope. Once we identify the type of infection that he has, we can select the appropriate medication.
