My 4 year old border collie is timid at the best of times.

Customer Question

My 4 year old border collie is timid at the best of times. But as we are coming up to fire work times she just runs and hides. We don't make a fuss we just let her do her own thing, go to her cage or our bedroom. Is there anything g I can give her to help her. I can't use the air freshener I've been told about as I have a springer/terrier x who just doesn't really give a toss.
Can you help, it breaks my heart to see her so stressed.

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian & I would like to help you with your wee one today.
First, you have done right to not fuss and give her a safe place to retreat to when the fireworks are ongoing. If you have not already, consider having that cage away from windows (where she can hear/see the fireworks -- an internal rool is best) and covering it with thick blankets (to insulate her from the sound as much as possible).
Otherwise, I have to say that I am surprised to hear that she was so dopey on the Zylkene. It isn't a sedative or drug; but instead a purified casein milk protein. So,it should not be sedating her at all. Though if you found she was sensitive to it, then perhaps she would be better on a lower dose. Or, as you asked, you can just use it prior to firework onset (to avoid wind up from the fireworks) and stopped as soon as they are finished. Alternatively, you could try her with Kalmaid (http://nutri-science.net/kalmaid-for-small-animals/) +/- a DAP/Adaptil Collar (http://www.adaptil.com/uk/ -- which would get around the diffuser based treatment) to see if that works better for her.
Finally, just as a long term option, you may also want to consider desensitizing her to fireworks in general. Its a bit late now, but there are noise/firework CDs on the market that can be used during the year to help her overcome her fear of fireworks when this time of year arrives (example @ http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clix-Noises-and-Sounds-CD/dp/B005LFOVWW).
I hope this information is helpful.

That's great thank-you. I'll try her on the zylkien first. Her cage is in our dining room where we have it covered with blankets and blackout curtains. We also close our blackout bling and curtains and put on the bedroom radio when she goes to the bedroom.

You are very welcome,
Good, that all sounds perfect from that side of managing her fear. And that sounds fine to use the Zylkene first.
All the best,
Dr. B.
