Rather than a cream I would see how a hemorrhoid suppository affects your cocker. You may have to experiment with the many products available. These contain various combinations of astringents such as hamamelis water or zinc oxide; vasoconstrictors such as ephedrine, epinephrine, or phenylephrine; and protectants such as white petrolatum, zinc oxide, calamine, aluminum hydroxide gel, glycerin, lanolin, and aloe vera. It's best that she be restrained while you insert a suppository; she's likely to snap at you if your ministrations are painful! You can also request a systemic analgesic in the form of a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) or narcotic and you can soften her stool with over the counter docusate sodium (Colace, e.g.) dosed at 100 mg daily. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
