My had 8 pups 2 weeks ago. First week uncomfortable

Customer Question

My bitch had 8 pups 2 weeks ago. First week uncomfortable and panting, 2nd week settled down although slightly loose stools. Day 10 went off food in evening, vomited bile next day, vet said rice and fish and yoghurt. 2 more days no vomit but liquid stools. Back to vet after very uncomfortable night, now on pro kolin, pumpkin, rice and fish. 2nd day and no change in stools but more comfortable for a few hours after pro kolin. Worried she is not getting enough nutrients for feeding pups and stools no better. Pups fine so far

It's not unusual for post-parturient dams to experience gastrointestinal distress which is expected to have a multifactorial etiology - Rowan's cleaning up the pups' stools, her experiencing hormonal and prostaglandin changes, and intestinal parasites becoming quite active at this time. My usual protocol is to worm these dams with either over the counter pyrantel pamoate (effective against roundworms and hookworms) or fenbendazole (Panacur) which is broad spectrum against the nematodes - roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms - and addresses the protozoan Giardia as well. These wormers are safe to administer when there are nursing pups. If Rowan had been wormed, wait 2 weeks until the next worming. I avoid antibiotics and other drugs which are likely to pass into her milk. The exception to that rule is if Rowan suffers from a metritis - uterine infection. Such an infection, however, usually causes a bloody and/or pusy vaginal discharge, fever, and generally quite an ill dog.The fish, rice, and yogurt diet is reasonably well-balanced and will suffice for 7-10 days. Much longer than that, however, a balanced diet appropriate for Rowan at this time would look like this:whitefish, fillet, baked or broiled, 6 ouncesrice, white, long-grain, cooked, 1 1/2 cupscanola oil, 1 tbspsalt substitute (potassium chloride), 1/4 tspbone meal powder, 2 tspsalt, iodized (sodium chloride), 3/4 tspmultivitamin & mineral tablet, kids complete, 1 eachzinc, 100 mg tablet, 1/2 tabletThis provides 728 kcal - the daily requirement of a 10 lb lactating dog and so you would need to multiply the ingredient amounts by a factor dictated upon Rowan's weight. The maximum of amount of zinc would be 1 100 mg tablet. The maximum amount of vitamin & mineral would be 1 tablet. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Row an was wormed with panacur from day 40 to two days post whelping, should I worm her now (10 days after last treatment) or wait
Expert:  Dr. Michael Salkin replied 1 year ago.
Please clarify...Rowan was wormed daily from day 40 to 2 days post-whelping? If so, there's no reason to worm at this time but the pups should be wormed at 2 weeks of age and every 2 weeks thereafter until they're 10 weeks of age. Thank you for your kind accept. I appreciate it.

Yes rowan was wormed for 23 days from day 40 and I have just wormed pups today with drontal
Expert:  Dr. Michael Salkin replied 1 year ago.
Thank you. No, there's no reason to worm Rowan at this time. I would wait 14 days from her last treatment and repeat the treatment 2 weeks later. I rarely exceed 7 consecutive days of fenbendazole. I'm pleased to hear that the pups were wormed with Drontal.
