Welcome! Thanks for asking your question. My name is***** will do my best to help you today. First I need to ask you a few questions so that I can be well informed and give you the best advice.
1- Is he hacking/gagging?
2- How old is he?
4- Any pre existing medical conditions?
5- Did he get into anything?
1- Is he coughing?
Gail, I am sorry, but, I am a bit confuse about what he was doing. Can you elaborate on what happened?
1- Was there like a noise coming from his throat/nose?
2- Is he better now?
Gail, can you follow the link below and see if what you saw was similar to this:
Gail, I believe what you are describing is a reverse sneeze, not all dogs show in the same manner. But, it appears as if trying to swallow air. A reverse sneeze is very similar to a regular sneeze but the air is coming in instead of out. Could there be other causes? Yes, it could have been debris in his upper airway, gagging secondary to an upper respiratory infection, etc. I would keep an eye on him for tonight. If this continues to happen the next would be a hands-on examination with your family veterinarian.
My goal is to provide you with excellent service - I hope I've provided the information you were seeking, if you feel you have received anything less, please reply back as I am happy to address follow-up questions. Kindly rate me when you are done.
You're welcome. :)
