Hello & Welcome to JustAnswer. I'm Kamil and i will do my best to assist you.

Your firmware appears to be corrupted.

Can you tell me when was it purchased?

Thanks

as it was a gift i can only say it would be december 2012

Chris,

Most problems can be resolved by resetting the Kindle.

Reset your Kindle by sliding and holding the power switch for 20 seconds. If you have the newest model, it has a push button. Press it and hold it for 20 seconds.

Your Kindle operating system should reload within three minutes. If it does not reloads, please let me know.

Thanks

I have tried pushing the button in and holding for 20seconds but it is still telling me it needs repair

Expert:  KamilAnwar1 replied 2 years ago.
Chris,

Most software related problems are resolved after a reset.

However, the issue here appears to be internally with the memory/hardware.

Therefore, you will need to return the Kindle to Amazon for a repair.

Since the Kindle is now out of warranty, they may not repair it free of cost, but as a one time exception to their policy as stated by other customers they do sometimes offer replacement for free.

Their phone number is 0800 496 2449 (free from UK LandLine).

Outside of Amazon, there are other companies that may repair the Kindle for a small fee. You may contact "Reo Technology Ltd" at
0845 299 6333.

Hope this helps.

And, if you can take a second to rate my service that will be appreciated.

Thanks
