- How old is the recorder and how long it have had the problem?
- Did you try to run cleaning disc in recorder to clean the lens?

do not know age, purchased second hand, problem since purchase.

can not run cleaning disc because whenever I put a disc in and close, message says 'no disc'.

Unfortunately it seems problem with the optical block of recorder because it doesn't even try to read the disc and instantly gives up, replacement of optical block/ DVD ROM in recorder is needed to resolve the issue but it may cost you good money and a new recorder would be better choice at this point.
I'm sorry there is no easy or quick fix for this problem and it is definitely hardware failure that needs defective DVD ROM replacement to resolve the issue.
I trust my input will help you out to make decision about this recorder repair or invest that money on new replacement unit. Please feel free to respond if you have any additional questions.
