my printer is not working properly. when I send a page to print

my printer is not working properly. when I send a page to print all I get is a series of dotted lines. I have run all the checks and am told everything is alright.

no, we didn`t have a printer disc my son managed to load it. this was about 2 years ago and the printer has worked fine up to this morning.
