I HAVE A SAMSUNG PLASMA TV WHICH LAST NIGHT DEVELOPED A BLACK VERTICAL LINE APPROX 1" THICK RUNNING TOP TO BOTTOM Model PS50A456P2D
There are two things that can cause this: 1. a faulty buffer board 2. the plasma panel itself
any easy clues as to which so i can open it up and swap part ?
There is no way to determine what one is causing it without putting a new buffer board in the set. If the buffer board fixes the problem then all is good, however if it does not fix the problem then the plasma panel itself is bad and the TV will be non repairable because the part will cost over £1000.
so is that a technical name for the part - bufffer board - so i can goto ebay and buy one ?
Yes, that is the correct term
Here is the board:
is it pretty straightforward to fit ? i'll probably head to youtube ?
Yes, it is a straightforward swap, and you will find some useful videos on YouTube if you need them :)

They are occasionally available on eBay and other sites.
Or a local electronics repair shop may be able to test and repair your existing board.
