Hello there and thank you for contacting Justanswer today!

My name is ***** ***** I will try my best to assist you.

Garmin themselves have discovered a problem with the nuvi 30, 40, and 50 products that prevents them from booting up successfully past the Garmin logo screen that you are currently facing with your device.

If the model of your Garmin Satnav is one of the nuvi 30, 40 and 50 products then please attempt the following steps below:

Things you'll need:

- A PC running Windows XP or newer (This process will not work on a Macintosh OS)

- Your nuvi 30, 40, or 50 device - mini USB cable to connect your device to your computer

- Access to your vehicle and power cable once you have completed the recovery process

Update your Software:

- Download and install the Garmin USB Drivers, please click the following link: http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591

Make sure you have installed this download before attempting anything below!

Now just download the following files to somewhere you can easily access them, but do not touch them until after they have downloaded. You should have both the recovery application and the recovery file.

- Download the Recovery Application from the following link: DANGEROUS URL REMOVED

- Download the recovery file for your device (see below)

For a nuvi 30 device download the following file: http://download.garmin.com/support/firmware/nuvi_x0/134900010350.rgn

For a nuvi 40 or 50 device download the following file: http://download.garmin.com/support/firmware/nuvi_x0/135000010350.rgn

- Drag and drop the .rgn recovery file which you just downloaded above using your mouse on top of the Updater.exe Recovery Application and let go of your mouse click. The application will launch if done correctly.

- With your device disconnected and turned off, use your thumb to apply pressure to the upper-left hand corner of the touchscreen

- While still holding the touchscreen, connect the device to your computer using the mini USB cable

- The Updater program will detect your device and will list the device in the "USB Device" drop-down menu - From the computer select the radio button next to "USB Device", Click OK, and let go of the touchscreen

- Your nuvi will now go through the process of updating software. It may power off and on during this process. Once complete, your device may display the following message: The software on the device is newer than the software you are attempting to install. Installing the older software will erase all user data. Install the older Software? If this message appears, please select No

- Disconnect your device from the computer and connect it to your vehicle power cable while plugged into a live power outlet in your vehicle Your device should now be recovered and updated.

Please follow each of these steps carefully so that you can fully understand how the process works. If you require any additional assistance with each of the steps I have listed above please feel free to reply so I can provide you with additional support!

This guide was referenced from the following Garmin support website and I tried to word it a little easier for you to understand: http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B4a78cf80-fce4-11e1-e8a7-000000000000%7D

If the satnav you are using is not one of these particular models, then please reply to me below with the model of Garmin Satnav you are using.

If you could also take a minute to rate my answer today that would be greatly appreciated!

All the best and hope everything goes smoothly for you,

James.

Hi, just to let you know I have updated my answer so it's easier to read and fixed the links so that you can click on them.

The only link that I couldn't fix because it ends in .exe is the recovery application. To download this file, you will need to go to the actual Garmin Support website and click on their link as Justanswer will not allow me to give you a link which ends in .exe.

You can get to this website here: http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B4a78cf80-fce4-11e1-e8a7-000000000000%7D

You will see that the steps are the ones which I have given you and you can click on the recovery application download link from their page!

All the best again, James.

Hello my name is***** look forward to assisting and am very sorry to hear that you are having this problem.
I want to warn you that it is possible you will need to replace a part in order to fix this.
There are a few different things that can cause this and a couple different parts so we would need to troubleshoot to find out for sure.
Which model Garmin is it?
.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

its a nuvi 50

.
Have you tried doing a master reset yet? How old is it?
.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

how do I do a master reset? its just over a year

Expert:  Freddy M. replied 2 years ago.
.
Start with the device OFF and unplugged from power
Press and hold the lower right hand corner of the display portion of the touchscreen
Power on the device while continuing to hold the display
Remove your finger from the touchscreen when "Erase all user data?" appears
Touch Yes
If text language is not in English, this is the button on the right

The device will now reset. Follow the on-screen prompts and then place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

1Although the master reset will erase all saved favorites, any loaded custom points of interest will remain intact on the device.

If this did not work, please come back and let me know what happened when you tried it by clicking on reply to expert so we can continue.
If it did work, please don’t forget to leave a positive rating - it is greatly appreciated.

.
Can you try using the eraser end of a pencil? If anything changes at all let me know.
.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

still nothing happened

Expert:  Freddy M. replied 2 years ago.
.
That is a very bad sign, how old is it? Do you have an extended warranty?
.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

just over a year

Expert:  Freddy M. replied 2 years ago.
.
Do you have an extended warranty? The factory warranty normally only lasts a year.
.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

no I don't have extended warranty

Expert:  Freddy M. replied 2 years ago.
.
Ok if it was recently over a year old call this number: 0808(###) ###-####or 0870(###) ###-####br/>If it is close to a year sometimes they will still cover the repair for you.

If it is too far out of warranty it will not be covered but they can give you a price.
I really hate to tell you this but to fix this since none of what we tried worked it needs to be sent in and the Garmin software needs to be reinstalled.
This is not something you can do yourself.

This can sometimes be expensive however so unless it is under warranty some people do decide to replace it instead.
I would call around for a price, where I am the price is normally $150 (£120) which is why most people go for the replacement.

If you have any questions at all click on reply to expert and let me know.
If not please don’t forget to leave a positive rating for my help - it is greatly appreciated.
Please note you are rating me only not this site or your Garmin.
