Are you hearing this via the TV speakers or its connected to a home theater system for sound?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

It is connected to 2 little Bose speakers

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.
How is it connected to these?
And do you get stereo from the TV itself?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

They are plugged in to the Audio output. And no I don't get stereo from the TV speakers

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.
Can you remove the power to the TV and wait 10 minutes
Then connect the power, turn on the TV and tell me if from the TV itself, it plays in stereo please
If not, tell me the model of the TV please

Could it be that it is not in digital mode?

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.
Yes this can be, if you put it into this mode, do you then get stereo?
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

unfortunately I don't know how you do that

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.
No problem, go to Settings, Sound Mode and choose standard sound
Let me know how the sound then works please.
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

I can't get into the Settings because now it has decided to keep switching itself on and off, something it has done before

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.
ok, remove the power and wait 10 minutes
Then power it on and try to access the settings.
Let me know the results please
Customer: replied 2 years ago.

I have managed to set it to Standard sound, but it is still turning itself on and off

Expert:  Richard replied 2 years ago.
This is part of the problem Charles.
It is the internal mainboard that has faulted.
The fact that you have the sound problem and it switches off and on confirms this
I am really sorry about this and you are going to have to return the
TV to have it replaced. It will be covered by the warranty if this has not expired, and the replacement will be done at no cost to you.
I am really sorry about this, and if you have problems, or would like any additional information or assistance, please do not hesitate to let me know.
