I have a Motorola tablet that is refusing to startup. Any suggestions? Other than throw it away and get a new one. There is some stuff on there that I would like to retain

This is usually an issue with the Firmware, so I would first like you to do this please.
Remove the charger from the Tablet and hold the power button to off for 35 seconds.
Release, then connect the charger and try to turn on the Tablet.

Hi Richard, All that's happened is the power light flashed and that's it.

Can you attempt this please.
Hold the power button for 60 seconds then release.
Then hold the volume UP and Power for 10 seconds then release.
Do you get to a menu?

Alas nothing. As before the power light flashes, logo appears then goes away

ok, we will try to get it into Download mode as this can force the firmware to be read.
Repeat the procedure we just did but use Volume DOWN instead of UP.

It is the internal memory that has faulted.
A corrupted firmware can cause this. But we have ruled this out by trying to reinstall it. The fact that we cannot get to the recovery window, confirms it is the memory that shorts out, and causes the device to reset.
I am really sorry about this and you are going to have to return the Tablet to have it replaced. The data is not recoverable in this state. It will be covered by the warranty if this has not expired, and the replacement will be done at no cost to you.
