How can I connect mt BD-H5900 Blu-ray player direct to my HW-H450 soundbar without using the HDMI cable which I use for connection to my TV so I may play CDs direct without powering up the TV?

Your soundbar has an Optical in port which you can see page 8 of the manual here

Thanks for the information but unfortunately it is not correct. If you closely examine the output of the Bluray player, it is a coaxial output and not an optical output. I am very surprised with that and would have thought Samsung would have ensured that the input/output of the two devices were compatible. I don't think there is a way forward unless they produce some form of converter.

ok that is suprising Paul that the made it coaxial.
But you can use this converter box to convert it for you which would then work
