Recently the external speakers connected to my iMac stopped

Hi, recently the external speakers connected to my iMac stopped working. I tested them with an iPad, worked fine, also plugged headphones into mac, silence. Can you help?

Click on the Apple icon in the top left, Go to System Preferences>Sound and then Output, highlite the internal speakers and click on unmute. Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals. Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer and you should then have sound
