Try doing a soft reset.

  1. Press and hold the Power button until "slide to power off" appears then release.
  2. Slide the Power switch right.
    Allow several seconds for the device to power off.
  3. With the device powered off, press and hold the Power button until the Apple logo appears then release.

I have pressed the power button for ages but 'slide to power off' does not appear. this is the little round silver button on the edge of the ipad?
