I have a Canon G12 camera, which has started malfunctioning.

Resolved Question:

I have a Canon G12 camera, which has started malfunctioning. I automatic mode the image produced is 'overexposed' with multiple horizontal bands of different colours. However, the camera appears to be working normally in video mode, i.e. all the images are completely normal.
Ive tried resetting the camera, but the problem remains.
Any suggestions as to what might be wrong/what i could do to rectify matters would be very gratefully received

The shutter may be sticking open, causing overexposure when taking images.
The camera repair tech will need to examine the shutter mechanism first for any defects.

The shutters doesn't appear to be sticking

If the shutter is definitely opening and closing normally then the problem can be attributed to either bad software or a fault on the main board. Since you have already tried a factory reset this means that there is likely a fault on the main circuit board inside the camera and it will require a repair.
