Hello & Welcome to JustAnswer. My name is Kamil Anwar and i will do my best to assist you.
Do you want to add the new BT email to Windows Live Mail?
I'm no too sure, I think that was suggested by BT
Do you have an email address already?
Yes, our e-mail address is (and we want to keep this one) XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX
How do you currently access your emails?
Please type only the part after the @ sign of your email
We can access via Windows Live Mail
And is it working fine now?
No, we were set up with Talk Talk, we had POP set as pop.orangehome.co.uk and smtp.talktalk.net this no longer works since we moved over to BT
Please type your email address again here with spaces before and after the @ sign
raven51 @ freeserve.co.uk ?
Is that the correct email?
No, there are no spaces at all, full e-mail is XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX
I know but this website hides the email.
When you type your email address on this window, please type spaces before and after the @ sign
OK jim @ raven 51 . freeserve . co . uk just remove ALL the spaces, hope this helps
NO it has been set from pop . orangehome . co . uk and smtp . talktalk . net (again remove the spaces) this was set up as we still used Orange and Talk talk together
I see - You were using pop.orangehome.co.uk to receive emails as that is what pop does, and smtp for talktalk to send emails.
Yes, that is correct
Your pop will stay same only SMTP will change to BT's smtp so you can send mails using BT's smtp and receive mails using pop for orange.
BT's smtp is smtp.btconnect.com
OK can you guide me through what I need to do next or set up the settings
Do you have your username and password for BT?
I did but even that came up as incorrect
We can test that. Please Click Here and see if you can login to BT's website using your email address and password.
Your username is your BT's email address and password is your BT's password
Is the a tutorial anywhere for this as I'm still trying to understand the settings
There is but that tutorial will only help once we know we have the correct username and password for BT
That link didn't work on my PC
Can you Click on the link above?
I copied the link, but again this failed, let me have another try
No, link wont work, I need the true http address
If you type BT Email Login on Google you will get the link to login to BT Email
This should be the second link - Try from there.
yes, at last I got onto that site
Great. Can you now login?
What do I need to do now regarding my Windows live mail settings
Are you able to login?
yes, into the BT e -mails but I still need to configure my Windows Live Mail settings
Great. I just wanted you to check for me if the BT email and password were correct.
You will need to change SMTP only in Windows Live Mail
See instructions by Clicking Here
Can you provide the http link my pc wont let me view the option on "Clicking Here"
Right Click on the account in Windows Live Mail
then Select Servers Tab
In the outgoing mail smtp: smtp.btconnect.com
Place a check on My Server Requires Authentication at the bottom
Then Click on Settings
Place a Check on Log on Using and type the BT email address and password.
What do I type I the General tab for Name and lower down e-mail address
Leave that as it is
Click on the Servers Tab
OK done that
Outgoing Mail (SMTP): smtp.btconnect.com
Next, Under Outgoing Mail Server place a check on My Server Requires Authentication
OK done that too
Place a check on Log on using, and enter your BT Email Address and Password
OK, so far so good, do I tick the box for "Remember Password" ?
And click on OK ?
And Apply ?
Correct, then you should be back to the normal screen
Receive email will not be a concern, the concern is sending emails. So can you try and send an email to a different address of yours or your own email address to see if it works.
This may or may not work because BT has a special service called Mail Relay where they allow use of their mail servers with third party domains and that is for business accounts. If this does not works, then we will need to see if you can usee freeserves own smtp.
No, none of those workd, still cant send or receive e-mails
What error message does it shows?
None at all, If I click on send & Receive nothing happens
This is how it displays an error.
Your's doesn't show anything, correct?
It didn't even let me get that far, nothing happens even when I click on Send & Receive
Can you click on the Home Tab
Then to the right on top, there will be a button (Work Offline / Go Online)
I have seen error messages before for example when working off line or the set up is not correct but I'm getting no error messages at all
Please Click on the Home Tab and see (Which button do you have with the earth icon on Top)
Does it says (Work Offline or Go Online) ?
I shut it down, message come up, do you want to send e-mails, so I did, then got this error message.
The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's email address. The sender's email address was 'XXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX'.
Subject 'kjkjk' Server Error: 550 Server Response: 550 Not permitted Server: 'smtp.btconnect.com' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC78 Protocol: SMTP Port: 25 Secure(SSL): No
That means, we cannot use BT's SMTP with this email address. So we will need to check if we can use freeserves on smtp
Can you go back to Properties and Click on the Server Tab
Also should smtp be smtp.btinternet.com
No it cannot be that.
It wont work.
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) : smtp.orangehome.co.uk
Also, uncheck my server requires authentication.
Then Click on Apply, OK
Exit windows live mail and start again, and re-try.
OK, tried that and got this message
Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems or a long period of inactivity.
Subject 'kjkjk' Server: 'smtp.orangehome.co.uk' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F Protocol: SMTP Port: 25 Secure(SSL): No
Is your account still valid with orange is it terminated?
It's still valid with Orange as in an emergency we can access e-mails via an Orange Web site, not really usueful but handy if we are away from our main desktop pc
We use this site so it's still active http://www.orange.co.uk/?linkfrom=email10.orange.co.uk&link=home
Can you go back to properties, server tab and change outgoing (smtp) to smtp.freeserve.co.uk
Make sure that this server requires authentication is unchecked.
Apply, OK and re-try.
WE are getting closer, we have now received all our e-mails from the switch over to BT but still cannot send or see any sent e-mails this error message is still active
An unknown error has occurred.
Subject 'kjkjk' Server: 'smtp.freeserve.co.uk' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC03 Protocol: SMTP Port: 25 Secure(SSL): No
Can you close Windows Live Mail
Should the port number settings be changed or left as they are?
OK, now closed
It is 25 right now correct?
Yes it's 25 and incoming is 110
Now open Windows Live Mail again
Also, are you currently logged in to their website to check emails ?
OR From any other mobile device ?
No any more, I was ealier, just got this error again
Subject 'kjkjk' Server: 'smtp.freeserve.co.uk' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0F Protocol: SMTP Port: 25 Secure(SSL): No
Can you change port from 25 to 587
Nothing is happening with send & Receive, let me try another e mail account via yahoo, give me a minute
We need to test the sending end, receive is working fine. Can you compose a email from windows live mail and send it to one of your other addresses
If the sending is successful, then you should receive email to your other account that is sent from windows live mail account.
Yes, that was received in the Orange account but not on Windows Live Mail
Where was it sent from?
I sent two e-mails from Orange jim @ raven51 . freeserve . co . uk to the same e-mail address and one from Customer @ yahoo .co .uk (Again just remove the spaces Both were received but not on Windows live mail
Can you exit out of online webmail account
Only use Windows Live Mail to test
Tried that too
Send another email from Customer @ yahoo.co.uk to jim @ raven51
And one email from jim@raven51 using Windows Live Mail to Customer @ yahoo
OK, done that, also tried Send & Receive Receivng but cannot see sent messages and also go this error message
Subject 'Re: OOOOOOREPLY' Server Error: 550 Server Response: 550 5.1.0 Authentification requise. Authentication Required. OUK102_402 Server: 'smtp.freeserve.co.uk' Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC78 Protocol: SMTP Port: 587 Secure(SSL): No
I can see some progress, can you go to Properties Again, Server Tab, place a check on My server requires authentication, Click on Settings, and replace bt username / password with freeserver's username (email) and password, click ok, apply, ok and re-try.
No, that didn't work either
It keeps asking for my user name and password each time I click on OK
Did you provide the username and password?
the username should be your email.
Yes, I did try that
Are you able to receive emails?
What about changing the Port 587 back to 25
No can't receive anything now at all
This appears to be a problem with orange, changing the port to 587 did work for a feww.
I am having to go now can this be continue later as I this still not been resolved?
No problem - I will help you try a few more things to troubleshoot this problem but this is an issue with orange.
