I have Mozilla Thunderbird on Windows 8.1. I have lost the usual options in writing emails including the "send" button. I have attempted to customize my options but without success. Can you please help (I am 83 years of age so have not grown up with computers but the email facility is most important to me). Thanks John XXXXXX

Press the alt button and the menu should open that would have help in it.
About is an option under the help menu, some newer versions may have a ? symbol instead of the word help.

You would need to check help and about in thunderbird itself to get the version.
