I'm struggling with Thunderbird response times. It took over

Resolved Question:

I'm struggling with Thunderbird response times. It took over 35 minutes to download 75 e-mails and hangs for about a minute just to open an e-mail and much longer to highlight then delete unwanted e-mails. I've defragged the hard drive and registry and cleaned up as best my limited knowledge allows but what I've done has produced only marginal improvements. Any ideas on what to try next - I'm too scared to back T'bird up, uninstall and reinstall!

Who is your e-mail provider (Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, etc)?
-- When you type the full address on this site, it is blocked.
-- What comes after the @ sign?

Talktalk is the main provider - talktalkbusiness.net

Talktalk e-mails are re-routed via 1&1 into my web domain, jamesaccounting.co.uk.

I have talktalkbusiness, jamesaccounting.co.uk and gmail accounts set up within T'bird.

The problem began about a week ago. Online research suggests that it's a common issue for version 34.1 which I upgraded to a few weeks back. Prior to that, I'd never exeperienced any like this in 10 years + of using T'bird.
