Outlook 2011 Gmail

when i click on the outbox it closes

Okay. Close Outlook.
Open the AppleScript Editor found in /Applications/Utilities. Paste in the following three lines:

tell application "Microsoft Outlook"
delete every message of outbox
end tell

Click the Run button at the top and this should delete every message in your Outbox.
Then test to send a new message.

smtp.gmail.com port is 25

change server address to smtp.googlemail.com
change port to 465
ssl option should be enabled/ticked.
then test.

Are you connected to the internet via a broadband or via a dongle/mobile device?

used to be via broadband. moving house so had to buy a dongle/mobile device as a temporary access until sky broadband connect me

This seems to be an issue with the dongle, it is limiting your access. You must have noted that with the browsing experience. Can you change the port to 587 and then test and also tell me what the imap address is?
