I had a thyroid test on Thursday, the doctor called me to say

Customer Question

I had a thyroid test on Thursday, the doctor called me to say that the blood test showed an usual reading and asked me to come in. They stated the blood count showed 200 which indicates very low thyroid in the blood. Yet I showed no signs of being ill when seen, which the doctor thought was odd. Other than feeling tired, is 200 as a blood count an indication to you of low thyroid. I am currently only taking 10mg of thyroixime (leo) a day. I would appreciate your advice

Mysticdoc :

Hi there,

I am Mysticdoc, experienced Internal Medicine Specialist.

I am here to help you with your concerns.

Mysticdoc :

I assume you are talking about TSH level.

Mysticdoc :

TSH of 200 does mean severe hypothyroidism or low thyroid.

Mysticdoc :

Sometimes, symptoms may not be experienced since you are already taking some amount of liothyronine

Mysticdoc :

However, you likely have levothyroxine ( T4) deficiency.

Mysticdoc :

Liothyronine ( T3) may not meet that deficiency.

Mysticdoc :

You should see your doctor to start on levothyroxine.

Mysticdoc :

The dose can be started at 50 mcg daily and then gradually increased till TSH level falls below 2.5

Mysticdoc :

Usually this takes about 6 to 8 weeks.

Mysticdoc :

Your fatigue symptoms will improve with levothyroxine.

Mysticdoc :

This type of lab results are commonly seen with autoimmune thyroid disorder also known as Hashimoto's.

Mysticdoc :

The normal thyroid gland gets destroyed by the body's immune system requiring more thyroid hormone treatment over time.

Mysticdoc :

Usually, the treatment is life long.

Mysticdoc :

Best wishes,

Mysticdoc :
