This question is on behalf of my daughter. She has split up

Customer Question

This question is on behalf of my daughter. She has split up with the father of her two children and until recently she was receiving modest amounts of support informally. When this stopped she decided to go through the Child Support Agency. They were informed by the Inland Revenue that his declared income (as a self employed builder) was about £200 per week. In fact he earns at least £600 per week. When she reported this to the CSA she was told there was nothing they could do about it because of the Data Protection Act. When she contacted the Inland Revenue, they said pretty much the same thing. Although he is officially self employed, he actually works (or sub-contracts work) from a building firm and when my daughter contacted his boss, he refused to give information about the true earnings of my daughter's ex partner. Where now?

Thank you for your question.
My name is Clare
I will do my best to help you but I need some further information first.
Do you mean that he receives this money in cash - or that he has a company and receives it in dividends?

Hi
Did he earn a lot of cash in hand whilst they were together?
Clare

Yes. And in addition to work with this Employer had regular work on the side for which he was paid in cash.

Hi
has your daughter reported this as Tax fraud?

Hi Clare

I'll speak to her and see what happened when she rang the tax office, and then I'll get back to you probably tomorrow. Is that OK?

Hello Clare

I've spoken to my daughter and she has reminded me of how her conversation with the Inland Revenue went. She informed them of the situation, but at the time her ex-partner had no fixed abode. He had been thrown out of his flat for not paying the rent and was living in his van. They said that as he had no address, there was nothing they could do. As far as she knows, he is still living in his van. She does however, know the address of the business he sub-contracts work from, but she is nervous of giving that information as it may implicate other people and it may be that as it's all cash, there would be no evidence anyway.

Hope that's useful

Hi
Does she have any evidence of his earnings at all?
