I got married in 2001 but we both realised we couldn't live

Customer Question

I got married in 2001 but we both realised we couldn't live together. I have been living as a single person since, we decided that unless either one of us wanted to remarry we wouldn't file for divorce, as I have always felt strongly about it, we have had a very much on/off relationship since, we are still close friends, should I have got a separation agreement at the time ??? We had no financial ties etc , and can I get one now and backdate it
