How can I access the 1940 New york city census? My grandfather,

Customer Question

How can I access the 1940 New york city census? My grandfather, XXXXX XXXXX was on the 1930 census, living at Amsterdam Ave., with wife Agnes and sons George & James.

I would then like to obtain the birth certificate for their son George, so that I can get further details of marriage and Agnes's birth in the Irish Free State.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I would like to see the 1940 census for New York city to find if XXXXX XXXXX is on it.

He used to live on Amsterdam Ave.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

I have no info regarding the sons apart from 1930 census.

Expert:  Brendan Joseph replied 3 years ago.
Hello John,

I have checked the 1940 census for George, I cannot find him, he may have died, there are a number of James & George's, I believe they had married, If I had their wife's first names I could identify them.

I believe I have located both of their birth dates.

Brendan
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Can you give me any info from the birth certificates. George would have been born 1911 & James 1913 (from census records).

If it's any help 1920 census lists them as George W. & James D.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Are you able to give me any info regarding their birth certs?

The 1920 census indicates they each had middle names :- George W. (born 1911) and James D. (born 1913).

How do I order the record?

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Good morning Brendan,

Would it be possible to find the Marriage Certificate for George & Agnes?

Probably between 1908 & 1910.

He was Presbyterian & she would be Catholic I believe.

Expert:  Brendan Joseph replied 3 years ago.

Hello John,

I cannot find their marriage certificate but I found George's naturalisation record. It gives the date of marriage and some other interesting information.

Hello John,

I have located george's passenger record, he arrived New York 20th August 1905 on the SS Caledonia.

He was born in Aberdeen, Scotland

Agnes was born Dublin Ireland 1875 she arrived in New York 1904, I may be able to find her passenger record.

Georges naturalisation was turned down because of a police report.

Brendan
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Fascinating stuff! It's hard to make out what is on the petition for naturalisation, but is there a copy of why it was turned down?

Expert:  Brendan Joseph replied 3 years ago.
Hello John,

I dont think you really want to know, I blew up the record, I can read evertthing on the document.

If you want a copy of the Police report, I can send it.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Brendan, I must say you are being very thorough.

I would appreciate a copy of the police report despite the unfortunate circumstances.

You also suggested you might find Agnes on the passenger list. That also would be most useful. John.

Expert:  Brendan Joseph replied 3 years ago.
Hello John,

I have posted a copy of the Police report already, I cannot positively identify Agnes without her maiden name. She was born in Dublin 1875, I should be able to locate her parents and siblings. You will have to either get a copy of her marriage certificate or one of her sons birth certificates. The date and place of the marriage and birth are in the records above.

Brendan
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Brendan,

I guess I can try Ellis Island for Ships arriving from Dublin in 1904, and look

for an Agnes.

You've been very helpful in answering all my queries.

Thanks again, John

Expert:  Brendan Joseph replied 3 years ago.
Hi John,
