I am using a sonos device to play through my onkyo amplifier

Resolved Question:

I am using a sonos device to play through my onkyo amplifier and speakers using the tape function for playback but I can only get a very low volume even when volume on amplifier is on max. I have previously connected a Pure A2 device in a similar way but had no problems with that. Can you help please?

The most likely issue here is simply that the line out signal from the sonos is simply at too low a level for the onkyo to properly amplify.
You can resolve that by adding an external preamp, inline between the sonos device and the onkyo:
