i have just bought a toshiba laptop and although it was working ok now when i put the
start screen up the cursur has disapeared and no matter how much i move the touch
pad it will not come on

It is possible that the cursor is locked.

Try pressing the F5 key and moving the mousepad. If the cursor does not work then try pressing FN key and F9 key together; now try moving it.
