I have a Toshiba Satellite A210 laptop, about 6 years old running

Customer Question

I have a Toshiba Satellite A210 laptop, about 6 years old running Windows Vista.
Whwn I switch on by pressing the power button I do not get the "usual" screen asking for my password XXXXX I get a screen headed Phoenix Technologies and below that the following

BIOS version 1.50
Bus 14 Device 06 Function 00
ERROR
RESOURCE cONFLICT PCI ON mOTHERBOARD
Bus 14 Device 06 Function 01
This Error message is repeated 4 times with a different Function number
At the bottom of the screen are option F1 to load defaults and F2 to Setup

I have tried both options but just loop back.
I have removed battery for several minutes and retried but just loops back.

Can you help me John

Hello my name is XXXXX XXXXX I will do whatever I possibly can to help answer your questions. I am sorry you have encountered this kind of problem when did this first start and have there been any adjustments made to the bios at all?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

This problem has only just happened and I think was caused by me switching off using the power button instead of the normal Windows shut down- only a guess.

I have tried taking out the battery for 30 mins as suggested on some on-line forums but this had no impact.

There has been no change made to the BIOS, to best of my knowledge.

Thanks

Try starting the computer up and immediately tapping F8 about once each half second.... see if you get any sort of start up menu or if the behavior changes. Let me know if there is any change. If there isn't, Charles should be back with you in a little while to continue.

Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Thanks, I have tried tapping the F8 as suggested but I am still getting the same screen, there is no start up menu nor any other change

I had heard of similar situations where the windows startup got corrupted and resulted in errors like the ones you are seeing so I thought it was worth a shot. Good luck, I will opt out and let you continue with Charles.

Are you able to get into Setup?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Yes I can

Expert:  James replied 3 years ago.
Good.
Go into setup - do you see an option to reset to defaults?
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Yes I do see that option

Expert:  James replied 3 years ago.
Please go ahead and reset to defaults, reboot, and tell me what happens.

I have done as you suggest, reset to default the system then automatically reboots to exactly the same screen with exactly the same messages.

There is no obvious change, no apparent disc activity

Expert:  James replied 3 years ago.
Okay, got it.

This means the southbridge on the motherboard has failed. If you reball it, it will clear the problem.
I can give you instructions on how to do it - if you're technical you can do it yourself.

Thanks,

J.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Yes I think I could do that if you give me detailed instructions, Thanks
