Resolved Question:

on my Lenovo thinkpad X240 the fan has been running all night...I cannot get the computer to turn on or off or anything...and its only a couple weeks old? what is going on???

I would suggest pulling out the battery

And then waiting for a while

Then put the battery back in and power it on...see if the behavior returns normal

Sometimes the system BIOS can do some strange things...

I have done that ....pulled it off last night but the fan still ran all night and is still running

So does the notebook work correctly ?

Can you access the BIOS?

I pulled it off again fan still running

If it is running with the battery pulled out...I am almost certain you have a hardware issue.

I can;t get it to turn on or off

Is it within the return period of the seller?

I would definitely suggest getting it replaced if possible

Otherwise would need to contact Lenovo to make a warranty repair/replacement

I am out of the country and this is my work computer so none of that matters this minute I need a Lenovo expert to tell me what the heck to do

I see, sorry didn't realize the situation.

there has to be an override or something? It was working yesterday and it has done this since I bought it...even my it person who loaded my programs said it was weird but then it started working and now its stuck in this fan mode and I cannot turn on or off

Typically Escape or Delete when you power on the computer

it just stopped so now what should I do

Might want to reboot and check the BIOS settings

put the battery back in and see if I can turn on and then maybe you can help me figure out what is going on

typically the fan speed etc. will be determined there

try to get in to the BIOS on startup

now I cant get it to turn on this is just not good the computer I am on is my personal and I have no issue with it

yeah ok it just came on hold on and maybe help me look bc I don't know where to look to check it

That behavior wouldn't normally happen because of any software problems

I think it finally turned off bc it ran out of battery...so I have plugged it in can you tell me where to look or check something?

Look in the BIOS

When you turn it on, hit delete or esc to access BIOS

fan control settings will be there

Customer:

I am in Lenovo solution center device manager will that help

BIOS will be before the operating system loads

Right when you power it on

you are a techgeek I am a normal person...the computer came on and now it is on so I am in the computers settings can I check something there?

No there isn't anything to check there

You have to enter a special menu right when the computer turns on

If it's not acting up with the fan I wouldn't worry about it...

this sucks oh well it is charging now but this is not a good machine

Yeah it's definitely doing something weird.

As I mentioned, try to exchange it when you can
