An Acer technician told me to return my laptop to factory settings

An Acer technician told me to return my laptop to factory settings in response to a software problem and its been 'shutting down' for 5 days now. I tried to go back to Acer but they are now saying that its out of warranty - only they'd said that in the first place! Is there anything I can do to fix it?
