Because the contract had expired on 31 March and I continued working am I correct in thinking that I carry on as before under the same terms ?

Yes, the contract would rollover and remain effective unless and until it was replaced with another. Also your employer cannot suspend you for alleged breach of the old contract unless they accept that it still applies.They cannot have it both ways.
