We have had in our foster care a boy that is now 22 months

Customer Question

We have had in our foster care a boy that is now 22 months old, he is under an interim care order and the family were taken out of the equation as no longer having a parental role by social services through the courts. We took the step to declare an interest in adopting him, he has been with us since he was 8 weeks old. We are both foster carers working for an independant fostering agency not the local authority. We were told that we would be expected to not work for up to 2 years and not take anymore placements, though we have had several stay with us during the childs time with us. We had put in a request of compensation for one year which seemed to get the thumbs up but on giving a second figure if we were required to take 2 years off work the process semed to come to a complete stop. Obviously i need to know what options we have, please bear in mind that we cannot stop working without an adequate package as we have a mortgage etc to pay.

Thank you for your question
I shall do my best to assist you but I need some further information first
Does the child have any special needs?

Hi
I assume that when you say you cannot work you mean as Foster Parents?
Claire
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

That is our work we are both foster carers, we are down for 4 placements at a time we average 3, our average pay element per person is £300 per week our wages per year have been in excess of £42 k, 2 years would be over 84 k. Originally the social services agreed to the one years compensation but then said we may have to not work for 2 years so the other figure was given if this became the case. They have since offered £116 per week being reviewed every 3 months but only for 1 year, the £116 was rejected for obvious reasons. But yes as foster carers as this is our job. Note the little boy has been with us all his life more or less and is used to other children and people coming and going.

Hi
Have you made it clear that on that basis you could not go ahead?
Claire
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

was made clear that the original offer was acceptable and our offer was left on the table but the offer from them was not accepted, they gave us 14 days to accept their offer. We made it clear financially their offer was not acceptable but we still wished to adopt.

Hi
Is he likely to be a difficult child to place?
Claire
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

Average healthy boy, same chance as most.

Hi
Then you have a problem.
You could rely on the fact that there are very few approved adopters out there at the moment and simply hold out in the hope that Social Services will agree to pay more for longer as in the long run it will be cheaper for them than leaving him in Foster Care.
Alternatively you can accept that it is not going to be possible and notify them accordingly.
You cannot make any application without Social Services support until the child has been in your care for 3 years.
I appreciate that this is not the news you want but sadly there is no pressure that you can bring in the matter
Please ask if you need further details
Claire
