Customer Question

Hello, i have sent a letter by Cumbria Constabulary saying that i have been caught on A66 70MPH dual carriageway at 87MPH
I have no previous speeding offences since i have started driving.
Question to you is:
what will my punishment be as i am not sure if it would be 3 or 6 points.
will i be given the oppertunity to attend a speed awareness course as an alternative to prosecution.

Lastly 4 years ago i got stopped for driving a friends car i thought i was covered on and received an IN10 7 point fine I called DVLA and this is due to be removed from my license next month.

let me know your thoughts.

Many thanks.

Hello and welcome to Just Answer.

My name is Alex and I'm happy to help with your question today.

Was there any particular reason for the speed?

Afriad not Alex, i had driven down south that morning and was in a bit of a rush to get home. Personally i never go above 80 so was very suprised at the 87 speed they have me at.

No problem.

A speed of 87 mph in a 70mph zone carries 3 penalty points and a fine.

The insurance matter appears to be too old now and will not count towards any sentencing exercise.

The police are unlikely to offer the speed awareness course - normally this is only available when the speed is marginally over the limit. In your case its 10% plus 10 mph which is above the threshold.

However a fixed penalty may well be offered as you have no other points.

Ultimately, the worst case scenario under the Magistrates Court sentencing guidelines is 3 points and a fine.

Hope this helps.
